AOP Assistants Awards Call for Entries

The Call for Entries for the 2009 Assistants Awards competition is now closed.

Categories:

Category winners & merits will be awarded where the judges see fit.

Portrait
Portrait is self-explanatory - the focus will be the human subject, most probably featuring the face as the main focal point of the image. This category will not include animals as the main subject. The subject should connect with the viewer; a great portrait can stir the soul and invite questions.

Life
Capturing any element of human or animal life, this category essentially covers the human condition and the results of its actions. Entries could be witty observations or in depth studies conveying humour, tragedy, irony, pain or pleasure. The Life category should have a focus on the way humans or animals interact with or influence the world around them. Judges will be looking for innovation and technical & observational skill.

Landscape
In the Landscape category, we welcome entries that show the beauty of the natural world or focus on the contemporary landscape that has been influenced by human life. Emphasis will be placed equally on technical excellence and observation, as well as the aesthetic use of light. Although the images in this category may have a human influence, the presence of human beings in the image is secondary.

Interiors & Architecture
This category comprises images that depict various elements found on the interior or the exterior of a building or series of buildings. Images may focus on the entire structure or on a single part of the structure, internally or externally. This category is looking to convey the experience of being in and around the built environment, where humans and animals will be a secondary element in the photo, if they are present at all.

Fashion
As you may expect, the Fashion category is looking for images which best convey a style, design, look or range of clothing or accessories. Ultimately this category is about how the photographer has portrayed the beauty of the fashion focus, be that clothing, accessories hair or make-up. Emphasis will be placed on innovative ideas and how the shot is styled, clothes photographed, or the how the models are posed. By its nature we expect the style to be contemporary.

Still Life
Depicting inanimate subject matter, it is anticipated that the images will be largely studio created. Subject matter can be anything but the images will be judged on composition, craft, technical excellence, lighting skills and imagination. A Still Life entry can comprise an individual object, elements of an individual object or object groups.

Project
In the Project category, we are looking for a set of 6, 7 or 8 related images that represent a project, art project or photo story on a single theme. The theme can be anything you wish, and an explanation of no more than 60 words may accompany your images.

AOP Assistant Photographer of the Year
The overall winner of the competition will be selected by our panel of industry professionals at the end of the judging process.
